Last month, EasterSeals Southern California gave our very own advocate, Sarah Tira, an award as their volunteer of the year!
Sarah started volunteering twenty years ago as a Counselor-In-Training (CIT) with EasterSeals Camp at YMCA Camp Oakes in Big Bear, CA. She then became a counselor, and now volunteers as a Head Counselor in charge of a cabin with 6-10 campers and 4-8 volunteers. She also volunteers as a member of the directing staff who runs the camp.
EasterSeals Camp is a week-long sleepaway camp for teens and adults with disabilities. Campers are able to participate in all sorts of regular camp activities with their assigned cabin, such as fishing, canoeing, target sports, and more. In addition, there are special programs like dances, a carnival, and a concert for everyone in the camp to enjoy together. If you'd like to learn more about the camp, please visit this link.
In addition to volunteering during the camp week and with the directing staff throughout the year, Sarah started a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization with some other volunteers to help streamline fundraising. Their hope is to be able to apply for grants and attract a wider audience of donors, and one day, they would like to expand to be able to support special needs camps all over the world! Sarah acts as the secretary and marketing manager of the nonprofit, Access Granted: Camp for All, also known as Access Camp.
