Meet the Advocate

Sarah Tira is a former moderate/severe special education teacher with experience teaching in a variety of educational settings. Her experience ranges from a segregated school site to a full inclusion program on a comprehensive high school campus. Her experience as a teacher gives her unique insight into how IEP’s translate into classroom instruction. Sarah started San Diego Special Education Advocates in 2018 and now enjoys helping students on a more individualized basis as an advocate.

As a high school student, Sarah began volunteering at a summer camp for children and adults with disabilities. This camp inspired Sarah to start a peer tutoring program in her own high school, and she has continued to volunteer with the camp, first as a counselor in training, then as a counselor, next as a head counselor, and now as a director, for the last 16 years.

Sarah was valedictorian of her high school and began her collegiate education at USD with the plan of becoming a special education teacher. She graduated from USD in three years with her bachelor’s degree in Liberal Studies with a concentration in Mathematics, and completed her credential program a year later. When she’s not working, Sarah enjoys spending time outdoors camping, at the park, or at the beach with her husband and two young sons. Reach out to San Diego SEA today if you’d like to learn more about how advocacy could help you!
